How to measure

Seven measurements, A to G

Match each letter to the diagram. Your height (F) chooses your size in the chart, and the other measurements confirm the fit. It takes about five minutes.

eThobe measurement diagram showing points A to G: neck, chest, waist, sleeve, thobe length, height and shoulder
A
NeckWrap the tape around the base of your neck, where a collar sits, just above the Adam's apple.Tip: Slip one finger under the tape so the collar won't feel tight when buttoned.
B
ChestLift your arms slightly, wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits and across the shoulder blades, then lower your arms and read it.Tip: Keep the tape level all the way round. If your chest is larger than your size lists, go up one size.
C
WaistMeasure around your natural waist, just above the navel, keeping the tape snug but not tight.Tip: Breathe out normally before reading the tape. Don't pull your stomach in.
D
SleeveWith your arm relaxed and slightly bent, measure from the centre of the back of your neck, across the shoulder and down the arm to the wrist bone.Tip: Ask someone to help. Measuring your own sleeve usually comes out short.
E
Length of thobeMeasure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the neck, straight down the front to where you want the hem to end, usually the ankle.Tip: Measure without shoes. For a full traditional look the hem should just touch the top of the foot.
F
Height · picks your sizeStand barefoot with your back and heels against a wall, looking straight ahead. Rest a book flat on your head, mark the wall under it, then measure from the floor to the mark.Tip: Between two height ranges? Choose the taller size for a full-length traditional hem.
G
Shoulder to shoulderMeasure across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder bone to the other, following the natural curve just below the neck.Tip: This is also the measurement that decides your bisht size.

Before you start

✓Use a soft fabric tape measure, not a metal one.
✓Wear a thin shirt or measure over the clothing you'll wear under the thobe.
✓Stand relaxed and breathe normally. Don't pull in your stomach or puff out your chest.
✓Ask someone to help for sleeve and shoulder. It's much more accurate.
✓Measure twice. If the two readings differ, use the larger one.

Common mistakes

✕Measuring height in shoes, which adds 2–4 cm.
✕Pulling the tape tight. It should sit flat without pressing into the body.
✕Letting the chest tape slip down at the back.
✕Measuring sleeve with a straight, locked arm.
✕Choosing by height alone when your chest is above your size's figure.

No tape measure?

Lay a thobe that fits you well flat on a table, buttoned. Measure chest straight across from armpit to armpit and double it. Measure sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff edge. Compare both with the chart.

Bisht

Choose by shoulder width. A bisht is worn open over the thobe, so it should sit on the shoulder edge without pulling. Overall length should end around the ankle.

Vest / Sidri

Measure chest and waist over your thobe, since the vest is worn on top. Vest length runs from the shoulder to the hip.

Kids

Measure your child's height and chest the same way, then check the age row. Children grow fast, so if they're between sizes, choose the larger one.

Fit tips

Getting it just right

Between two sizes?

Go up one size for the relaxed, traditional drape and extra room during prayer.

Use a thobe you love

Lay your best-fitting thobe flat and measure collar to hem. It's the most reliable guide.

Check your shoes

The hem should rest just above formal shoes. With sandals, a size shorter looks sharper.

Questions

Sizing questions

–How do I choose my thobe size?

Start with your height, because it decides the size. Each size covers a 5 cm range, from size 50 (150–155 cm) up to size 66 (190–195 cm), and the size finder shows your match at a glance. Next, compare your chest with the figure listed for that size in the Men's Thobe chart. If your chest is larger, move up one size. This method works across our full thobe collection, whichever regional style you prefer.

–Do Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti and Qatari thobes use the same sizes?

Yes. All our men's thobes use the same size numbers, so your size stays the same whichever style you choose. What changes is the cut and the details: each regional style has its own collar, cuffs, front placket and drape. Find your size once in the chart, then browse the Saudi thobe, Emirati thobe, Kuwaiti thobe and Qatari thobe collections and pick the look you love most.

–How should a thobe fit?

A well-fitted thobe skims the body rather than hugging it. You should be able to raise your arms, sit and bow in prayer comfortably. The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder, the sleeves should end at the wrist bone, and the hem should fall just above the ankle or rest on the top of the foot. If you fall between two sizes in the Men's Thobe chart, go up one size for a relaxed, traditional drape.

–Will my thobe shrink after washing?

Our thobes keep their fit when they're cared for properly. Wash on a gentle, cool cycle, avoid tumble drying on high heat, and iron on a low setting, as each product page recommends. The lighter fabrics in our summer thobes breathe well but need extra care with heat, while the heavier weaves of our winter thobes hold their shape well. If you're between sizes and worried about shrinkage, choose the larger size.

–Which size bisht goes with my thobe?

Choose your bisht by shoulder width (measurement G) rather than by your thobe size. A bisht is worn open over the thobe, so it should rest on the edge of your shoulders without pulling across the back. Measure using our How to measure guide, compare the figure with the Bisht chart and pick the closest size, going up if you fall between two. Then browse our bisht collection for formal and wedding styles.

–Should I size up for a winter thobe or a vest?

Winter thobes use heavier fabrics, so if you plan to wear a thermal layer underneath, consider moving up one size from your usual chart result. A vest or sidri is worn on top of the thobe, so measure your chest and waist over the thobe itself and compare with the Vest / Sidri chart. Explore our waistcoats and men's winter clothes to build a warm, well-fitted outfit for the colder months.

–How do I measure a child for a kids' thobe?

Measure your child the same way as an adult, using a soft tape over light clothing. Height and chest matter most, then check waist, sleeve and thobe length against the age row in the Kids' Thobe chart. Children grow quickly, so if they sit between two sizes, choose the larger one so it lasts longer. Browse our boys thobes, and for Eid add a matching kids bisht, sized by shoulder width.

–What if I'm taller than size 66?

If you're taller than 195 cm, or your chest is well above the figure for size 66, email support@ethobe.com to ask whether custom tailoring is available for your order. Include all seven measurements from our How to measure guide, especially height, length of thobe and sleeve. Check the size finder first, too: many customers between 190 and 195 cm fit comfortably into size 66 from our thobe collection.

–Should I measure in inches or centimetres?

Use whichever unit your tape measure shows, because every chart on this page lists inches and centimetres side by side. Try not to mix units or convert by hand, since rounding can push you into the wrong size. If your tape has both, centimetres are slightly more precise for the chest, neck and shoulder measurements that decide comfort. Start with the size finder, then confirm your result in the size charts for your garment.

–What if my size doesn't fit?

If your thobe doesn't fit as expected, we're here to help. Read our Refund Policy for the full terms on exchanges and returns, including time limits and the condition items must be in. Then email support@ethobe.com with your order number, the size you received and your measurements from the How to measure guide.
